A new World Baseball Classic provision bars insuring player contracts after age 37, preventing older players from participating. Los Angeles Dodgers infielder Miguel Rojas, who turns 37 on Feb. 24, was denied the chance to play for Venezuela in what he called his final season, despite wanting to be available as a replacement or for practice. Insurance denials also affected stars such as Jose Altuve and Francisco Lindor. Puerto Rico reportedly could be without Carlos Correa, Victor Caratini, Emilio Pagan and Jose Berrios, prompting the Puerto Rico Baseball Federation president to consider withdrawing. Puerto Rico will host Pool A March 6-11 in San Juan.
