The MLB Players Association expressed growing concern that expanded sports gambling poses increasing risks to player safety and the integrity of baseball. Players reported being followed by gambling sites and other entities soon after the 2018 Supreme Court decision that allowed wider legal sports betting. Recent incidents include two Guardians pitchers placed on non-disciplinary paid leave amid an investigation, an outfielder banned for life for betting on games, and an umpire fired for gambling-rule violations. The union and league coordinate on player safety, well-being and player education to address threats and prevent future gambling-related issues.
