"I don't know if any of us in this room ever have full assurance of anything, but I want to help the Pirates win more games. That's it. I don't do the job because of the job. I do the job because I want to be a part of making this thing work. Winning more games and being able to leave PNC Park at night feeling better and everybody feeling better. That's why I do it."
"hasn't heard anything to the contrary"
Pittsburgh fired manager Derek Shelton six weeks into the regular season after an early stretch of poor results. The team went 52-51 under interim manager Don Kelly through September 4, then lost 12 of its last 14 games to sit 66-89 and more than 20 games under .500. The current record already eclipses prior 86-loss seasons. Paul Skenes posted a 2.02 ERA and is the heavy NL Cy Young favorite, indicating core problems lie elsewhere. General manager Ben Cherington says he has not heard otherwise about returning and intends to focus on helping the club win more games, delaying a full evaluation of Kelly until season end.
