"Winning gold is the biggest thing. Yeah, men's hockey, women's hockey, all the other golds that we won in the Olympics. We're America, we've got to assert our dominance over everybody else. That's what we do. It's going to be fun. USA wins, it's what we do. Gotta keep it going."
"There's going to be two, two-and-a-half weeks to pick guys' brains. Talking to them is great but seeing how they operate is another thing. So, aside from winning a gold medal, it would be a pretty good reward for doing that."
"That's what we do it for. This is the greatest country in the world. That's what I believe. That's why I wanted to serve, why I went to the Air Force Academy."
Paul Skenes, the Pittsburgh Pirates' Cy Young Award-winning pitcher, is motivated to compete in the World Baseball Classic following Team USA's Olympic gold medal achievements. After his spring training start against Atlanta, Skenes will join Team USA for the tournament beginning in March with pool play in Houston against Brazil, Great Britain, Mexico, and Italy. He expects to make two starts during the competition, which culminates with finals in Miami on March 17. Skenes views the tournament as an opportunity to learn from elite pitchers on the roster including Tarik Skubal, Joe Ryan, Matthew Boyd, Logan Webb, Clay Holmes, and Nolan McLean. He emphasized his desire to represent U.S. servicemen and women through his participation.
