'60 Minutes' host Scott Pelley calls out Paramount in shocking on-air attack on CBS' parent company
Briefly

Scott Pelley, during a tribute to Bill Owens on '60 Minutes', openly condemned CBS's parent company, Paramount, for interfering with editorial content amid their merger process. Pelley highlighted how these new supervisory measures over content compromised journalistic independence. He stated that, while no stories were blocked, the culture had changed, leading to Owens' resignation. Pelley praised Owens as the ideal leader for '60 Minutes', expressing that the team's morale was low due to these developments, showcasing a significant tension between corporate governance and journalistic integrity.
"Our parent company Paramount is trying to complete a merger, the Trump administration must approve it," Pelley said.
"Paramount began to supervise our content in new ways, none of our stories have been blocked but Bill felt he lost the independence that honest journalism requires," he continued.
"No one here is happy about it but in resigning Bill proved one thing, he was the right person to lead 60 minutes all along."
Pelley went rogue at the end of Sunday night's episode during what appeared to be a simple tribute to Bill Owens, the longtime '60 Minutes' executive producer who quit last week over the company's interference.
