Research shows that, for the first time, people in the UK are spending more time on mobile devices than watching TV. This trend is most prominent among 15 to 24-year-olds, who spend nearly five hours daily on their phones. While mobile usage is characterized by consistent engagement throughout the day, TV viewing remains a more passive evening activity. The IPA survey highlights a growing reliance on mobile for content consumption and social connection, despite concerns about emotional impacts and distractions from continuous use.
"We can't definitively say that devices drive how people feel, but there are distinct patterns. Consistently high mobile phone usage throughout the day could imply that adults remain more distracted, on-the-go, or less 'switched off'."
"Phones are always on, always within reach and increasingly central to how we consume content, connect and unwind," said Dan Flynn, deputy research director at the IPA.
