A study published by Sapien Labs highlights that children who use smartphones before age 13 face increased mental health challenges in adulthood. Data from over 100,000 young adults in Generation Z reveal a correlation between early smartphone access and higher rates of suicidal thoughts, aggression, and detachment from reality. Girls tend to have diminished self-worth and resilience, while boys show reduced empathy. Experts advocate for restricting smartphone access before this age, citing concerns over social media, cyberbullying, and unhealthy family dynamics as contributing factors to mental health deterioration.
Among the more than 100,000 18-to-24-year-olds whose outcomes were tracked, those who got phones when they were younger experienced more suicidal ideation, aggression, reality detachment, and hallucinations as they aged.
Girls reported lower self-image, self-worth, confidence, and emotional resilience, and boys were less calm, stable, and empathetic compared to those who got smartphones after 13.
