Tua Tagovailoa is focusing on mental adjustments heading into 2025, moving away from merely physical changes. Following missed games due to injuries since coach Mike McDaniel's arrival, he recognizes the need for smarter plays to ensure his availability. Tagovailoa is actively shifting his mindset during practice, choosing to limit unnecessary risks and prioritizing team longevity over individual competitiveness. The changes aim to enhance both his performance and health, acknowledging that strategic decisions in play can prolong his playing career.
I've got to sort of shift my mind-set of 'this isn't just practice where guys can't hit me,' Tagovailoa said. I got to take it into a sense where, if this guy is here, get the ball out and if I'm scrambling and this guy's getting close, not just to hold on to it knowing they can hit me if this was real football. Just throw it away or run and then just stop to signify its a slide.
The longevity for me to be on the field with my guys is more important than that one play, Tagovailoa continued.
