South Florida's Tri-Rail utility is discontinuing its late-night train service due to low ridership levels, with only 1,500 monthly rides per train. This pilot program, launched last year, was intended to cater to swing-shift workers and late-night travelers. However, the considerable gap between day and night ridership led to the decision to cease the service effective June 30. The funds saved will enhance daytime services and support special events, reflecting a reallocation of resources to meet more effective transportation needs in the area.
The discontinued trains ran for the last year as a pilot program to gauge demand for late night service. Unfortunately, due to low ridership we could not justify continuing to run the service at this time.
Despite being a well-intentioned pilot program, the late-night Tri-Rail trains failed to attract enough riders to be sustainable, with only 1,500 rides per month.
