Tri-Rail shutting down late-night train service for downtown and Miami airport
Briefly

South Florida's late-night Tri-Rail trains, which aimed to serve swing-shift workers, night revelers, and late-arriving air travelers, will cease operation after June 30. The pilot program operated for a year but failed to attract enough riders to warrant the continuation of service. Vince Sciullo, a project manager, confirmed that the low ridership made it impossible to justify keeping the trains running. The discontinuation primarily affects southbound trains after 9 p.m. and northbound trains after midnight, reflecting a lack of demand for late-night transit options in the region.
The discontinued trains ran for the last year as a pilot program to gauge demand for late night service," Vince Sciullo, project manager for public affairs, said in an email. "Unfortunately, due to low ridership we could not justify continuing to run the service at this time."
The idea sounded plausible enough: Run late-night Tri-Rail trains to and from downtown Miami and Miami International Airport to serve swing-shift workers, late-night revelers and air travelers who arrive after sundown.
