""My daughter died in my arms. The next morning, my wife simply didn't wake up. I think it was because of the shock of her [daughter's] death,""
""The dead were simply thrown into the sea immediately,""
""There was a lot of violence on our boat,""
""On the fourth day at sea, some panicked and accused each other of being witches.""
Migrants departing West Africa for work in Europe face deadly, chaotic Atlantic crossings. Boats often become adrift and unmaneuverable, producing extreme deprivation, panic, and fatalities. Survivors recount immediate disposal of bodies at sea and disrespectful handling of the dead. Violent outbreaks and accusations of witchcraft arise under extreme stress, causing injuries and fear among passengers. Many survivors report no subsequent accountability for violent acts committed during voyages. The crossings leave deep emotional trauma for survivors who witnessed family deaths and endured dehumanizing conditions without legal redress or protection.
