A 32-year-old e-bike rider named Vikas collided with an open car door while traveling southbound on Lefferts Boulevard near Jamaica Avenue in Richmond Hill at about 8:25 a.m. on Aug. 25. A 46-year-old man in a 2017 Mercedes-Benz GLC opened the driver's side door that the rider struck. The cyclist was thrown from the e-bike, suffered a head injury, and was taken to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. The driver remained at the scene. No charges have been filed so far while the NYPD Collision Investigation Squad continues its inquiry. Citywide e-bike collisions have increased year-to-date.
