A suspect being committed to Mulgrave Street Prison in Limerick allegedly lashed out in the reception area, biting two prison officers and punching a third. Three officers were left shaken and required treatment at the prison, with one taken to hospital. An internal investigation at the prison has been launched and the matter will be referred to An Garda Síochána for possible criminal investigation. The maximum sentence for assaulting a prison officer recently increased from seven to 12 years. A major security operation restored calm and staff were offered support through employee assistance services.
