Mr McCarthy suffered critical injuries when his bike apparently spun out of control at lunchtime during a practice session at the Vernon Mount motocross track near the Kinsale Road roundabout. The biker was pronounced dead at the scene before he could be rushed to Cork University Hospital (CUH)"

Separate recent fatalities in Co Cork included motocross competitor Stephen McCarthy (45), a pedestrian struck on the M8 near Mitchelstown, a man killed in Ballycotton involving a dumper truck, and a Japanese woman who collided with a truck while cycling in the city centre.
