Mr McCarthy suffered critical injuries when his bike apparently spun out of control at lunchtime during a practice session at the Vernon Mount motocross track near the Kinsale Road roundabout. Separate recent fatalities in Co Cork included motocross competitor Stephen McCarthy (45), a pedestrian struck on the M8 near Mitchelstown, a man killed in Ballycotton involving a dumper truck, and a Japanese woman who collided with a truck while cycling in the city centre.
