Research has indicated that multiple sclerosis (MS), a severe and life-shortening neurological condition affecting over 9,000 individuals in Ireland, could be managed by targeting the inflammation in the brain triggered by the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). A recent study published in the Nature journal emphasizes the significance of addressing this inflammation as a potential therapeutic approach to mitigate MS symptoms and progression. The study involved Dr Éanna Fennell, who is currently conducting research at the University of Zurich's Institute for Experimental Immunology under Professor Christian Munz.
Research indicates that blocking the brain inflammation caused by the Epstein-Barr virus could significantly slow or stop the progression of multiple sclerosis.
