Nearly 100 people come forward after 42 Brazilian nationals are deported from the State
"None of the 42, including 15 people who had been serving prison sentences, "had permission to be here", Minister for Justice Jim O'Callaghan posted on X. The Garda National Immigration Bureau (GNIB) led a targeted operation focusing on the removal of Brazilian nationals who were subject of deportation orders from the State between June 1 and July 31. There were also 62 persons recorded "as voluntary returns from the state"."
""It has also been noted that since this operation there has been an increase in engagement with the Voluntary Return process with nearly 100 new applicants since the start of the operation," gardaí said in a statement this afternoon. The GNIB has also confirmed that a large number of persons who are recorded as holding valid deportation orders are no longer resident in the State "and are likely to have returned to Brazil". "The GNIB continue to make enquiries on these deportation orders to establish the whereabouts of these persons," gardaí added."
"The GNIB have worked closely with the Department of Justice, Home Affairs and Migration to identify, target and remove illegally resident Brazilian nationals from the State, "either on a voluntary return basis or by enforcement of a deportation order". The "extensive operation" that was also supported by the Irish Prison Service, incorporated operational searches and targeted operations undertaken by the GNIB. Detective Chief Superintendent Aidan Minnock, Head of the Garda National Immigration Bureau, said: "This GNIB led operation targeting the removal of Brazilian nationals who are illegal in the State over the past two months demonstrates An Garda Síochána's ongoing commitment to remove persons who are illegal in the State. A GNIB-led operation from June 1 to July 31 targeted Brazilian nationals subject to deportation orders, resulting in 42 removals and 62 recorded voluntary returns. The GNIB reported a subsequent increase in engagement with the Voluntary Return process, with nearly 100 new applicants since the operation began.
