The fatal collision took place on the northbound stretch of the motorway at Carrigane, Mitchelstown, at around 9.15pm between junction 11 and junction 12. The body of the man, whom gardaí described as a pedestrian, was taken to the mortuary in Cork University Hospital where a post-mortem examination will take place. The driver of the car, a man in his 20s, was not injured."

Separately, four people were seriously injured when a car left the M9 southbound at Stonecarty, Knocktopher and were taken to Waterford University Hospital; Gardaí seek witnesses and footage for that collision as well.
