"A well-known Belfast priest has criticised the exclusion of people in Northern Ireland who identify as Irish citizens from the presidential election in November."
"In a homily at Knock shrine in Co Mayo, Fr Timothy Bartlett lamented that, "though I am told I am an Irish citizen, and even though I have deeply treasured that identity since I was a child, even in the face of violent opposition, I am not entitled to vote in that election.""
People in Northern Ireland who identify as Irish citizens remain ineligible to vote in the Irish presidential election in November. The exclusion applies even to those who are recognised as Irish citizens and who have treasured that identity since childhood, including individuals who have faced violent opposition because of that identity. Being told one is an Irish citizen does not confer voting entitlement for the presidential poll. The matter was raised in a public context associated with the charity Aid to the Church in Need and referenced a location in County Mayo.
