The Garnet Fire ignited on Aug. 25 and has spread to almost 50,000 acres, reaching 14% containment. A rapid 12,000‑acre run occurred when the fire entered a drainage full of dead and downed trees killed by bark beetles and ran uphill. Slightly drier conditions and increased winds contributed to the explosive growth. Smoke from the fire affected Yosemite gateway towns and crossed the Sierra Nevada crest into Eastern Sierra communities and western Nevada. Air quality reached hazardous and very unhealthy levels in Lee Vining and Mammoth Lakes, and the National Weather Service issued a dense smoke advisory.
