Still no electronic tagging of prisoners despite 2007 law paving the way
"Justice Minister Jim O'Callaghan has failed to meet his commitment to roll out electronic tagging for certain prisoners by the end of the year. Speaking at the Prison Officers' Association (POA) annual conference in May, Mr O'Callaghan said it was "embarrassing" that legislation enacted in 2007 to introduce electronic tagging for prisoners on temporary release had still not come into effect."
"The Justice Minister committed in May to a system rollout by the end of this year"
Jim O'Callaghan failed to meet his commitment to roll out electronic tagging for certain prisoners by the end of the year. He called the delay in implementing the measure "embarrassing". Legislation enacted in 2007 to introduce electronic tagging for prisoners on temporary release has still not come into effect. The commitment to a system rollout was announced in May at the Prison Officers' Association annual conference. The intended electronic tagging would apply to prisoners on temporary release and requires activation of the 2007 law to take effect. The rollout deadline at year-end was not achieved.
