Mayor Daniel Lurie's proposed city budget is causing significant concern among housing assistance agencies, particularly for low-income families in the Mission District. Organizations like HOMEY are losing funding from the Emergency Rental Assistance Program, which poses risks for families already under stress from federal immigration policies. Program manager Roxana Morales highlights the fear of deportation impacting families’ ability to work and their overall stability. Other organizations supporting housing rights are also facing cuts, leading to an increase in homelessness and evictions. These changes jeopardize the community's safety and well-being.
"We've already heard people not wanting to go to work, or not wanting to let their kids go to school because they're afraid," says Roxana Morales of HOMEY.
"It's going to make it harder for people to be financially stable and keep their housing, if they're afraid that going to work or being out on the street is going to get them deported," Morales notes.
"These are our neighbors, friends, and families. Without low-barrier support like ours, they are at higher risk of falling through the cracks."
