The Los Gatos Creek Watershed Collaboration is engaged in a significant wildfire risk reduction effort in Santa Clara County, focusing on clearing 840 acres of forestland. With the support of a $6.9 million Cal Fire grant, the initiative, which includes partners like the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space Preserve and San Jose Water, aims to enhance fire safety around the Lexington Reservoir area. New technologies, such as remote-controlled machinery and AI for early fire detection, are integral to efficiently managing forest health and mitigating wildfire risks, with project completion slated for fall 2027.
"Collaboratively, we want to think about how we can get more acres protected and ensure that, ultimately, we're reducing the risk," Schalet told San José Spotlight.
New fire safety technology is boosting the work, including remote-controlled machines that thin the overcrowded forest floor by mulching and chipping brush.
