David Martinez Carries Mexico in His Heart Into Noche UFC Showdown with Rob Font
"I had several changes. I was preparing for the Ecuadorian Carlos Vera. Then Quang Le, but just a couple of weeks ago I got a call from my manager to offer me this fight, a ranked fighter,"
"I discussed it with my family and my coaches, and I felt ready to go. My coaches felt the same so that's how the fight came to be."
"He's a high-level striker. He's kept his spot at the top for a long time, but I've fought great fighters as well. It's nothing I haven't seen before, and I'm ready for this fight,"
"At first I was (disappointed). I wanted to fight in my home country, representing for my people, but I have the people in my heart,"
David Martinez (12-1) moved into the UFC after a DWCS decision over Xavier Franklin and opened with a first-round TKO of Saimon Oliveira. Martinez accepted a short-notice bout against ranked veteran Rob Font for Noche UFC after opponent changes, deciding with his family and coaches that he was ready. Martinez acknowledges Font's experience and high-level striking but remains confident due to his own background against strong opponents. The card moved from Guadalajara to San Antonio, and Martinez says he will carry the Mexican people in his heart while competing.
