Joshua Van admits not knowing Demetrious Johnson fought in UFC
"I swear to God, I didn't know he was in the UFC. I saw him fighting in ONE Championship. His highlight was everywhere when he knocked out the guy with flying knee... Now I know him but I've never watched his fights."
"Johnson defended the UFC flyweight title 11 times before losing it to Henry Cejudo in 2018. Johnson was surprisingly traded to ONE Championship following the loss in exchange for Ben Askren. Johnson went on to have an illustrious career in ONE Championship, where he became the flyweight champion."
Joshua Van won the UFC flyweight title against Alexandre Pantoja at UFC 323 in December via injury. Van sparked controversy by calling Pantoja the greatest flyweight of all time, prompting fans to mention Demetrious Johnson, widely regarded as the greatest flyweight and arguably the greatest MMA fighter ever. Van later revealed he hadn't watched much of Johnson's fights and grew up watching Pantoja. Van admitted he didn't know Johnson competed in the UFC, only recognizing him from viral highlights of his flying knee knockout over Adriano Moraes and from Johnson's ONE Championship career. Johnson previously defended the UFC flyweight title 11 times before losing to Henry Cejudo in 2018, then was traded to ONE Championship where he became champion before retiring in 2024.
