Miles Mykkanen grew up wanting to sing and dance on Broadway but was turned down by musical theater programs and instead studied opera at the Juilliard School. At 34, he opened the Metropolitan Opera season in a leading role in The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay. The opera features a libretto by Gene Scheer and a score by Mason Bates, based on Michael Chabon's novel. Mykkanen portrays Sammy Clay, a Jewish youth in World War II-era Brooklyn who teams with cousin Joe Kavalier to create a Superman-like comic hero. He will also sing the Bridegroom in Kaija Saariaho's Innocence at the Met, a role he first performed in the 2024 U.S. premiere at San Francisco Opera. Mykkanen previously performed mostly small parts at the Met, with his 2021 Holy Fool in Boris Godunov attracting critical attention. Michael Heaston, the Met's artistic administrator, recommended him for the Sammy role after encountering him at Juilliard.
