"He was playing a little piano, then trumpet, and even bongos. He even had a bongo solo!"
""He had a sound right from the beginning," Ralph Towner remembered. "He had those big strong hands.""
""he'd hit a note on the bass and there was electricity right away.""
Ralph Towner, Glen Moore and Nancy King met as students at the University of Oregon in the late 1950s and early 1960s. A University of Oregon Parents Weekend combo contest provided an early public showcase where Towner's multi-instrumentalism and Moore's bass attracted attention. Their early encounters and jam sessions revealed distinctive musical gifts: Moore's powerful acoustic bass, Towner's versatility on piano, trumpet and bongos, and King's sublime voice and instinctive song interpretation. Moore and Towner began performing together and later formed the quartet Oregon, blending jazz and world music and achieving international acclaim. Towner died January 18 at age 85; King died months earlier. Both are members of the Oregon Jazz Hall of Fame.
