"These are folks who are known for six-stage shows, crazy costumes, being kind of rebellious, punk rock - like that's the music industry. And so, I think it makes sense that we would see good support,"
"These pins are about so much more than a red carpet moment. It's about people taking a stand and doing what they can to show up to say that ICE should be out of our communities."
Entertainment awards season coincided with a federal mass deportation campaign in Minneapolis, pressuring artists to decide whether and how to join protests against immigration crackdowns. Activists circulated protest pins and pressed celebrities and their teams to wear and share them at events leading up to and during the Grammys. Public backlash intensified after a Border Patrol officer fatally shot nurse Alex Pretti, federal agents detained 5-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos, and journalist Don Lemon was arrested. The Grammys generated a stronger visible show of support than the Golden Globes, with artists wearing protest apparel and explicit messages against ICE.
