"From September through May, Cal Performances at UC Berkeley is offering a lineup of internationally renowned artists in music, dance and theater, with multiple opportunities designed to spark conversation and deepen understanding of global themes. At the heart of the season is the series called Illuminations: Exile & Sanctuary. Over the year, lectures and panel discussions with performing artists and UC Berkeley scholars will explore the theme of the series."
"Among those performances aligned with the theme, the fall lineup includes Kronos Quartet in Beyond the Golden Gate on Saturday, Oct. 11, which merges music, film and conversation to explore the impact of Chinese Americans on American culture. The next month is Manual Cinema's The 4th Witch, on Saturday, Nov. 22. It is an otherworldly production of shadow puppetry, actors in silhouette, and immersive sound design that imagines a young girl, orphaned during wartime, who unwittingly becomes apprenticed to the three witches from Shakespeare's Macbeth."
"The season starts with two standout classical recitals. On Friday, Sept. 27, Grammy-winning countertenor Aryeh Nussbaum Cohen performs a varied program including German lieder that is not often considered part of the countertenor canon by Brahms and the Schumanns; songs by Black American composers H. Leslie Adams and Florence Price; music inspired by Cohen's Jewish heritage; and the West Coast premiere of a new composition by Jake Heggie."
