"What started as a casting call for a supposed background performance on Outer Banks quietly morphed into something much bigger: a full-fledged band, a Prime Video series, and a growing touring act with sold-out shows ( get tickets here while you can!). Zendé Murdock of The Runarounds recently spoke with Kyle Meredith about the long game behind the project - one that saw five young musicians unknowingly audition for their own TV show, then spend years becoming a real band"
"The Runarounds didn't just exist for the screen; they wrote, rehearsed, recorded, and lived like a band first, eventually releasing music produced by Talking Heads' Jerry Harrison and now stepping fully into their post-show chapter with the single "Chasing the Good Times." Looking back, Murdock describes the origin story as equal parts surreal and perfectly calculated. "I saw an Instagram story about five years ago... It was kind of marketed as extras for Outer Banks," he explains."
"That bait-and-switch led to years of slow, intentional development, including sessions with Harrison, which Murdock calls "an awesome experience," adding that the early years felt like "this big secret project that you can't talk about." Now fully untethered from the show's narrative needs, The Runarounds are carving out their own future, starting with "Chasing the Good Times," produced by Cage the Elephant's Brad Schultz. "Brad walked in looking cool as ever and said, 'I have this idea,' and the whole chorus was his," Murdock says."
A casting call presented as background extras for Outer Banks became the starting point for The Runarounds, a group of five young musicians who unknowingly auditioned for a television project. The musicians spent years writing, rehearsing, recording, and living as a band before appearing on camera. Early sessions included work with Talking Heads' Jerry Harrison. The project developed slowly and privately, described by members as a secret undertaking. After the show, the group pursued an independent musical path, releasing new material including the single "Chasing the Good Times," produced by Brad Schultz of Cage the Elephant, and building a touring act with sold-out performances.
