"It's with mixed emotions, but above all, deep appreciation, that I share the news that we'll be closing the restaurant later this spring. Months of reflection haven't lessened my ambivalence, but ultimately it feels like the right decision and the right path."
"Chewy, blistered and deliciously caramelized, the crusts arrive laden with toppings both traditional (mozzarella, crushed tomato and basil) and California cool (roasted winter squash, mascarpone, spring onions). Don't sleep on the antipasti either, since the starters are first-rate."
"While this marks the end of Del Popolo as a bricks-and-mortar restaurant, I'm excited to begin a new chapter focusing on our frozen sourdough pizza. It's guided by the same commitment to authenticity, process, and quality that built and sustained both the truck and the restaurant."
Del Popolo, a celebrated San Francisco pizzeria founded by Jon Darsky in 2012 as a food truck, is closing its brick-and-mortar restaurant at 855 Bush Street on May 8 after operating there since November 2015. The Michelin Guide recognized it as a Bib Gourmand recipient for great value, praising its wood-fired pizzas and antipasti. The closure marks a strategic shift toward frozen pizza production, which the restaurant launched in 2020. Del Popolo frozen pizzas are currently available in over 100 grocery stores across California, Arizona, and Nevada. The owner expressed mixed emotions about the decision while emphasizing commitment to authenticity and quality in this new direction.
