The Brooklyn Children's Museum will host the "Celebrate the Caribbean" festival, showcasing the borough's Caribbean communities. This annual event, part of the Labor Day weekend celebrations, emphasizes an immersive approach to culture with storytelling, dance, music, and food. Key activities include steel pan drumming workshops and Carnival dance performances, alongside art and literature celebrating Caribbean heritage. Partnerships with local businesses and community leaders enhance the festival's impact, offering children a valuable opportunity to engage with various cultural traditions in a supportive environment.
"At Brooklyn Children's Museum, all of our programming reflects the diversity of the communities of Brooklyn," said Dylan House, director of public programs at the museum.
"We think about Caribbean culture through many different lenses - storytelling, performance dance, music, food and costumes," House said.
"This is a space for kids, and we try to reflect the diversity of cultural traditions and give them a well-rounded view of the world."
"I think it's really important when kids are able to see their own culture represented and to learn about other people's cultures as well."
