Cinco de Mayo, often misunderstood as merely an occasion to drink tequila, holds deeper significance, especially for the Mexican-American community. In Mexico, it commemorates the victory against the French in Puebla. However, Mexican-Americans have transformed it into a celebration of their enduring identity and contributions within the United States. The New York Mexican community, comprising over 330,000 individuals, strives to break free from stereotypes and carve out a space to showcase the richness of their culture, emphasizing that they are integral to the city’s fabric.
To me, the power in New York's Mexican community is that we've managed to find pride and joy in our heritage in spite of messaging about our communities.
Mexican-Americans have a lot more to offer than just being reduced to stereotypes, and we want the world to see the richness of our culture.
