A new campaign has been launched to combat subway surfing, involving Governor Kathy Hochul, various NYC agencies, and professional BMX athlete Nigel Sylvester. This peer-driven initiative, developed with NYC Public Schools, utilizes comic book-style storytelling to illustrate the dangerous consequences of subway surfing on individuals and their communities. Characters in the comics navigate the temptation of surfing, while the narrative emphasizes the broader impact on friends, families, and first responders. Sylvester, as the campaign ambassador, participates in announcements aimed at educating the public about the risks associated with this dangerous trend.
According to the governor's office, the newly-developed campaign is based on research led by NYC Public Schools and students at the High School of Art & Design.
The campaign, in comic-book panel style, follows several kids who face the choice of whether they will subway surf; the focus then shifts to the circle of people who are affected by the characters' decisions.
