Eleven high school students in Syracuse are facing possible felony charges for kidnapping after allegedly victimizing younger lacrosse players. The incident, described as exceeding normal hazing, involved an attack where a victim was taken to a remote area, bound, and thrown in a trunk. The lacrosse season has been canceled, with school authorities emphasizing the need to address and reset the culture within the program. The district attorney highlighted the severity of the actions, which are captured on videotape, indicating psychological effects on the victims.
"I've seen the videotape of what happened to this young man. It is not a rite of passage. It is not a trivial matter. I don't know how long this young man will carry the psychological scars of this incident."
"We must address the culture of the program, and the most appropriate way to do that is with a reset," said Westhill Central School District Superintendent Stephen Dunham.
