A scheduled guest speaker event at Northeastern University featuring historian Raz Segal was canceled after the university required a list of attendees, prompting backlash from civil liberties group FIRE. They argued this demand infringed upon students' free expressive rights and could create a chilling effect. The event, intended to address serious topics including genocide studies and the Holocaust, was supposed to precede the university's Holocaust Awareness Week, highlighting the contentious nature of free speech in academic settings.
"Under the restriction, students could not attend the controversial event without facing official surveillance - creating an impermissible chilling effect," FIRE Program Officer Aaron Corpora wrote in the letter.
"Northeastern would only let us have our event with Raz Segal if we gave them a list of students attending, which would be handed to campus police," JLAJ announced.
