The Sigma Gamma Rho sorority, alongside State Sen. Kevin Parker and the Bed-Stuy YMCA, hosted a dry swimming clinic on April 26 for National Healthy Kids Day. The event focused on drowning prevention, providing CPR basics, swim gear demonstrations, and safety tips. This initiative aligns with Sigma Gamma Rho and USA Swimming's "Swim 1922" program, which seeks to bridge the racial gap in swimming education, given that a significant percentage of Black and Hispanic children lack swimming skills and face higher drowning risks.
Equipping our children and families with the tools they need to stay safe in and around water is not just a seasonal concern.
70% of Black children and 60% of Hispanic children don't know how to swim, and Black children are three times more likely to die from drowning than their white peers.
