Council members criticized NYPD leaders during an oversight hearing for their dismissal of evidence showing the agency's racial bias against Black and Latino drivers. A report indicated that Black drivers are disproportionately stopped and searched, compared to white drivers. NYPD Director Joshua Levin attributed this disparity to deployment strategies in high-crime areas. Council member Lincoln Restler countered this by highlighting the extreme racial disparity in arrests, searches, and use of force against Black and Latinx drivers, citing a report from the New York Civil Liberties Union that supports these findings.
I'm disappointed, Mr. Levin ... when 90 percent of people who are getting arrested are Black and Latino, that's a problem. It's an extreme disparity.
The data doesn't back that up at all. The NYPD's own data shows disproportionate stops, searches, and arrests against Black and Latino drivers.
