Former Governor Andrew Cuomo, trailing significantly, conceded defeat, acknowledging Mamdani's performance.
"Tonight is his night. He deserved it. He won," Cuomo said, acknowledging his loss while attempting to make a comeback after a sexual harassment scandal.
Under New York City's ranked-choice voting system, if no candidate gets more than 50%, the candidate with the fewest votes is eliminated and their votes redistributed.
