Midtown Manhattan Panel Overwhelmingly Backs 34th St Busway - Streetsblog New York City
Briefly

Manhattan Community Board 6 overwhelmingly voted in favor of a busway plan for 34th Street, with a strong backing from local leadership and City Council members. The measure aims to improve slow bus speeds, currently averaging under five miles per hour for 30,000 daily riders. While the resolution passed comfortably, concerns raised by some community members included insufficient data and outreach. The opposition feared that banning private vehicles might lead to traffic issues, despite evidence from similar busways indicating otherwise.
The leadership of nearby Community Boards 4 and 5 had previously teamed up with CB6 to call for a busway, and City Council members Erik Bottcher and Keith Powers, who represent the corridor, both support the measure to speed up buses.
Almost 30,000 bus riders per day suffer crosstown buses at achingly slow sub-five miles per hour speeds in many areas of the thoroughfare, which is why the DOT is using one of the best tools in its toolboxes to speed up the rides.
