NJ Scales Back Part of Gov. Murphy's Turnpike Boondoggle - Streetsblog New York City
"Today's decision acknowledges that the previous proposal would've opened the floodgates of heavy traffic through communities that already bear a high burden of traffic and air pollution. Sherrill showed true, community-led leadership by rejecting the expansion that would have exacerbated Manhattan traffic and environmental concerns."
"Sherrill's $6.7-billion proposal will bring the bridge to modern standards with shoulders and improvements, allowing traffic to shift off the aging existing bridge by 2031. She wants to fix approach routes to the Holland Tunnel for safety improvements only—without expanding capacity."
New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill has rejected her predecessor Phil Murphy's plan to build a twin-span, eight-lane bridge over Newark Bay. Instead, she approved a $6.7-billion project to replace the 70-year-old bridge while maintaining four lanes total and adding shoulders and safety improvements. The new bridge is expected to be operational by 2031. Sherrill also stated intentions to improve approach routes to the Holland Tunnel for safety only, without expanding capacity. Local politicians and environmental advocates praised the decision, noting that the expansion would have increased traffic congestion, pollution, and climate impacts in already-burdened communities.
