"Due to an in advertent unmute, part of that conversation was captured. My remarks were not directed at the student speaker, and they do not reflect my beliefs or values. Hunter College placed a professor on leave following racist remarks made during a Zoom meeting that were captured on video and spread on social media. The professor, who teaches Biological Sciences, allegedly made derogatory comments about Black individuals and misattributed a quote to Martin Luther King Jr. The college president announced the suspension and stated the remarks were abhorrent. The professor later claimed the comments were taken out of context and were intended to explain systemic racism through historical examples. The incident occurred during a Black History Month celebration focused on anti-Black systemic racism and educational institutions' roles in addressing discrimination.
