NYC Council pushes to expand Fair Fares transit discounts to more low-income New Yorkers
Briefly

City councilmembers and transit advocates are urging Mayor Eric Adams to expand the Fair Fares program, which provides discounted transit rides to low-income residents, to include those earning up to 200% of the federal poverty line. Currently, individuals making up to 145% of the poverty level qualify. This change would significantly increase access for many struggling New Yorkers. As of now, approximately 361,000 are enrolled. Councilmember Selvena Brooks-Powers advocates the expansion, emphasizing that affordable public transit is crucial for pursuing opportunities and improving quality of life.
"No one should have to choose between a Metrocard and groceries. Fair Fares is smart policy, it's equitable policy and it's time we make it a reality in this budget."
"Public transit is the lifeblood of our city. Being able to afford the fare means you can pursue job opportunities and go to school."
