Protests erupted outside 26 Federal Plaza over allegations of inhumane conditions for detainees held by ICE. During the demonstration, an emergency call reportedly came from inside the building, suggesting someone was stuck in an elevator. The New York City Fire Department quickly responded, but upon investigation, firefighters discovered all elevators were functioning normally, and the building manager was unaware of any incident. Eyewitnesses also noted a van typically used by ICE exiting the complex, raising questions about the timing and authenticity of the emergency call amidst the protests.
As the fire truck approached, the throng of protesters and police at the corner of Broadway and Duane Streets parted to let the emergency vehicle pass.
While the firefighters were inside, a white panel van of the kind ICE sometimes uses to transport detainees raced out of the federal complex's underground garage.
We were checking all the elevators, and they were all working normally. We talked to the building manager, and he didn't know anything about any call for a stuck elevator.
