Bernardo Raul Castro Mata, a homeless Venezuelan migrant, received a 28-year prison sentence for attempted murder after shooting two police officers in East Elmhurst. Mata was arrested last year following a pursuit that began when officers attempted to stop him for riding a motorcycle illegally. During the struggle to apprehend him, he shot Police Officer Richard Yarusso and Police Officer Christopher Abreu, both of whom survived the incident, with one officer returning fire and injuring Mata in the process.
