Marina Lee, a computer science student at USC, created the EvacuMate app after her grandmother experienced an evacuation alert during the Los Angeles wildfires. Recognizing a widespread need for clarity during such emergencies, the app helps users compile essential items, important documents, emergency contacts, and monitor air quality. Lee developed the app in a month for Apple's Swift Student Challenge, showcasing her creativity and coding skills honed since age seven, despite the tight deadline compared to her peers.
Growing up in LA, I've always been aware of the wildfire risks that come with living in Southern California...But the urgency truly hit home when my grandmother found herself in the evacuation zones during the recent LA wildfires back in January.
Realizing that so many other people were probably experiencing the same confusion and fear, she decided to build an app to solve the problem: EvacuMate.
It took Lee about one month to develop the app and submit it to Apple's Swift Student Challenge...However, she was ready to rise to the occasion.
As a 'very creative' person, Lee first focused on the app's design and layout.
