Orb, a new app by Ookla's ex-CEO, offers a broader picture of your internet connection | TechCrunch
Briefly

Doug Suttles, former CEO of Ookla, has introduced a new tool called Orb, designed to assess internet connection stability by measuring latency, packet loss, jitter, and speed. Recognizing the evolving needs of internet users, Suttles aims to provide a more holistic view of connectivity rather than just speed. Orb generates a stability score based on the responsiveness, reliability, and speed of the network, helping users troubleshoot issues before they become significant problems. The app suggests solutions for scores below 80, utilizing LLMs for guidance. Orb is available on various platforms.
Speed tests are like the dipstick in your car, which will tell you that you ran out of oil once your car breaks down. We wanted to build a dashboard to tell you that you are low on oil, so you can fix that problem.
Orb checks network connections for three key variables: Responsiveness, which is measured by a combination of lag, jitter, latency, and packet loss; reliability, which measures responsiveness over time and packet loss over time; and speed, which is your usual download and upload speeds.
