Cam Whitmore's dreams may already be dashed before training camp begins

"As a Maryland native with the talent and upside to be a star in this league, joining the lone team in the DMV made the fit even more ideal than just the increased playing time the Wizards had to offer. And while that may still prove to be true, the roster construction done by general manager Will Dawkins' this offseason may put a wrinkle in the forward's plans with his new squad."

"As the season looms, expectations were that Whitmore could be poised for a huge role on Brian Keefe's squad. Considering the roster, the former first-round pick seemed like an ideal candidate to fill the role in the front court, specifically at small forward. Following the injury dealt to Bilal Coulibaly, there seemed to be a growing sense that perhaps Whitmore could be the guy to step in the starting lineup and fill that role at the 3 spot that would allow for the Wizards to immediately insert the high upside prospect into the thick of things."

"However, in a recent episode of the Game Theory Podcast, Sam Vecenie echoed his doubts about where Whitmore fits in to the team's plans heading into the season. Vecenie suggests that perhaps Whitmore could fill the power four role for the Wizards and start at power forward when the season gets underway., but it's unlikely that he is able to fill that role even if he is the closer thing to a power forward Washington has. Unfortunately, even if he does fill that role, it wouldn't do service to what Whitmore's best at."

Cam Whitmore joined the Washington Wizards with expectations of increased playing time and a strong fit as a Maryland native. The roster upgrade by general manager Will Dawkins introduced uncertainty about where Whitmore will play. Whitmore’s best role appears to be as a slashing small forward built around his elite scoring and drafted position.
