Paul Skenes was named to the All-Star Game for the second time in his career, enabling him to be teammates with Clayton Kershaw. Kershaw, selected as a 'Legend Pick,' accepted his 11th All-Star selection after initial hesitation. Skenes, excited to learn from the future Hall of Famer, noted Kershaw's impressive career and character. Skenes also enjoyed watching his Pirates teammate, Oneil Cruz, in the Home Run Derby, highlighting the new faces and experiences at this year's All-Star festivities in Atlanta.
"I kept my distance a little bit. Our lockers were next to each other. I didn't get any time, really, to talk to him [Monday]. But talked to him a little bit today. He's such a class act. It's just so impressive, obviously, what he's done in the game. The human that he is. We were in the waiting room before the red carpet today. He had all his kids. Watching him be a dad, too, it was just cool. It was a cool experience for me."
"I mean, Cruzy in the Home Run Derby. That didn't happen last year. That was obviously a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for him, but for me to be able to watch as his teammate, that was pretty cool."
