With Jordi Fernandez out, Steve Hetzel guides Nets and offers rare insight into rookies
""I hope to have fun with it," Hetzel said. "Working for Jordi has been some of the most fun I've ever had. The way he allows us as a staff to put our imprint on the team and have a voice. So, I feel comfortable speaking to the team directly with the amount that he gives us... I feel very comfortable with his system and stepping in.""
""He calls himself a specimen," Hetzel said of Fernández."
""I think with each one of them, we've been very, very pleased with the progress and come like different moments,"
Jordi Fernández missed the Nets' matchup at Barclays Center after testing positive for the flu, so assistant coach Steve Hetzel stepped in as acting head coach. Hetzel previously led Brooklyn's Summer League teams in 2024 and 2025 and helped install Fernández's system while Fernández coached Team Canada, guiding the summer roster to a 3-2 record. Hetzel emphasized carrying over Fernández's core principles of competing hard, playing unselfishly and staying connected. Hetzel praised the staff empowerment Fernández provides and said he felt comfortable stepping into the role. The Nets were 2-2 in the current five-game stretch and aimed to finish 3-2, and Hetzel reported being pleased with rookie progress.
