Ben Johnson Made This Harder On Himself | Defector
"We knew coming into this game that this is personal,"
"Really, all these games personal, but, this one we felt like we'd been betrayed from the staff to players. And we love Ben, we still love Ben. He's a great coach. He's a great mastermind but, yeah, it was time to get after him."
"Fuck Ben Johnson!"
Ben Johnson left his role as Detroit offensive coordinator to become Chicago's rookie head coach. In three years at Detroit, Johnson helped turn the Lions into a top-five offense, introducing innovative concepts and trick plays. Week 1's Lions loss to the Packers raised questions about who was driving Detroit's offense. Week 2 saw the Lions beat the Bears 52-21 and visibly target Johnson: the defense recreated Johnson's Stumblebum trick play after an interception, coach Dan Campbell went for fourth-and-goal to push past 50 points, and fans chanted in derision. Brian Branch said players felt betrayed by Johnson yet still loved him.
